WK — Building a digital legacy

Years: 2025–2026 Role: Web design and development · E-commerce implementation · Infrastructure and deployment Project: doblevk.com
The project
WK is the artistic project of Roberto, a Mexican musician whose work is still listened to and shared after his death. Together with Esmeralda, his wife, I worked on creating a digital space that could gather part of that story in a place of its own.
From the start there was one idea that ended up defining the project: not to build a page about WK, but a place where his work could keep being discovered.
The platform brings together music, photographs, videos, memories, stories and an official store within a single experience. It launched on 2 May 2026, the date Roberto would have turned 37.
The challenge
The project had to solve two needs that normally live apart.
The first was narrative. We needed an experience with enough personality to represent WK without turning the site into a traditional biography page or a memorial.
The second was entirely operational. Alongside the editorial content there was a real store with physical products, inventory, orders, payments, shipping and pre-orders.
The solution had to let both sides coexist without one’s design being constrained by the other’s technical needs.
The idea
The site was conceived as a journey. Not every visitor would arrive the same way: some already knew WK and came to remember, others might be discovering him for the first time. The structure had to work for both.
We built sections dedicated to his story, discography, photographs, memories and tributes, plus a store that keeps distributing part of his physical work.
The goal was for the project to work not merely as a static archive, but as a platform that could keep growing with new material.
Visual direction
The visual approach starts from a predominantly dark aesthetic, using photography as one of its central elements and yellow as the accent colour.
The design deliberately avoids an institutional look. The images, the spacing, the typography and the motion aim to make the experience feel closer to going through an artist’s material than to consulting an information page. The identity had to support the content without competing with it.
Architecture
One of the main technical principles was not trying to solve everything with the same tool.
Legacy frontend
The main experience was built as a modern application and deployed on Vercel. That gave us more control over:
- composition and design;
- navigation;
- animation;
- responsive experience;
- performance;
- how the site evolves from here.
E-commerce
For the store I used WordPress + WooCommerce + BeTheme on traditional infrastructure. WooCommerce handled the transactional layer:
- catalogue;
- inventory;
- cart;
- checkout;
- payments;
- orders;
- shipping;
- pre-orders.
Rather than rebuilding those features inside the main frontend, the architecture let each need run on a platform specialised for it. The challenge was making both experiences feel like parts of the same project.
Official store
The store started mainly around WK’s physical discography and was set up to take on new products later.
One particular case was handling pre-orders. Products could be identified with the preventa tag, which made it possible to show specific messages during the purchase flow. That made it clear certain products would ship at a later date and cut down on confusion at checkout.
They’re small details visually, but they matter to the experience of the product as a whole.
The launch
The publication date was part of the narrative. The project launched on 2 May 2026, Roberto’s birthday.
Ahead of the launch we built a temporary experience with a countdown. We also had to prepare the transition of domains and services so that, when the moment came, the infrastructure pointed to the new experience without disrupting the store.
The technical rollout and the story of the project ended up happening at the same time.
My involvement
My work spanned several stages of the project:
- shaping the concept of the experience;
- interface design;
- frontend development;
- site structure and navigation;
- WordPress/WooCommerce implementation and customisation;
- pre-order specific logic;
- domain configuration;
- infrastructure and deployments;
- integration between the main experience and the store;
- technical support through the launch.
I also worked with Esmeralda on how to organise and present the material related to Roberto.
Outcome
The result is a digital ecosystem that gathers WK’s legacy in a space of its own while keeping a working infrastructure for continuing to distribute his work.
The project let me work across design, development, e-commerce and infrastructure within a single solution, but it also left me with an idea that ended up mattering more than any technical decision: technology can also be used to keep memory alive.
It wasn’t just about publishing a website. It was about building one more place his story could keep reaching.
